Project 2 - Socks for Rick

Rick likes ankle socks. So, Rick is being my next victim in the sock frenzy. This pair is going much faster than the last. Here are some pictures most recent first.
I just wish he had smaller feet. If these were for me, the first one would be done by now. I still have a good inch and a half to knit before I do the toe decreases.

The socks are coming along nicely. I'm at the gusset part of the first one. I'll likely get it finished by the weekend and then I can cast on for the second one. I'm also going to cast on a fingerless glove pattern so that I have something to work on if I get to the point where I can't go any further without help while I'm in Colorado.

Speaking of Colorado, I'll be visiting for a training class from 12/1 - 12/9 in case anyone wants to hook up.

I've completely lost my mind. While it could be argued that this is not a new occurrence...I've taken up knitting. I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit. However, me being me, I decided that the only way I could get myself really into it was to knit something that I would use. Since I'm not much of a sweater person, or a scarf person...I'm doing socks. This decision has resulted in some interesting responses at the Knit Night group that I'm going to....Because....socks are hard...
However, I'm jumping in with both feet....and eventually, I'll have something to show for it.

Don't get me wrong, I love Serenity, and I love taking her picture and putting her in different Barbie clothes. So, I had complained half-heartedly that I missed the snow. I was only kidding...really.
Apparently someone was listening, because it decided to blizzard in Colorado. Last "official" count of snow totals at my mom's house was 26 inches.
Snowbound Wednesday and Thursday. Hopefully tomorrow we can get out of the house. We did some digging today since it finally stopped snowing around 10am.
I'll never wish for snow again.

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? I like both, but I'm always glad when it's egg nog season. Though I miss having real egg nog from a dairy. Like I had in Colorado
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Wrap them usually. I'm a gift bag sort of person on other occasions, but during the holidays, it's more economical to wrap.
3. Colored lights or white on tree/house? I've never had lights on the house, we never did that as a child. I always want to put them up now that I own my home. I just have never gotten around to it. Now that we're practically the only house in the neighborhood that doesn't have lights, I might put them up next year.
4. Do you hang mistletoe? Nope
5. When do you put your decorations up? Usually, the tree goes up the day after Thanksgiving. I've always had an artifical tree and don't see a reason to change.
6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Probably my mom's scalloped potatoes, or my special cranberry relish.
7. Favorite holiday memory as a child? Getting my first bike
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? I don't remember, but I'm sure I told my sister.
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? Not normally.

You are Joshua Abraham Norton, first and only Emperor of the United States of America!

Born in England sometime in the second decade of the nineteenth century, you carved a notable business career, in South Africa and later San Francisco, until an entry into the rice market wiped out your fortune in 1854. After this, you became quite different. The first sign of this came on September 17, 1859, when you expressed your dissatisfaction with the political situation in America by declaring yourself Norton I, Emperor of the USA. You remained as such, unchallenged, for twenty-one years.

Within a month you had decreed the dissolution of Congress. When this was largely ignored, you summoned all interested parties to discuss the matter in a music hall, and then summoned the army to quell the rebellious leaders in Washington. This did not work. Your days consisted of parading around your domain - the San Francisco streets - in a uniform of royal blue with gold epaulettes. This was set off by a beaver hat and umbrella. You dispensed philosophy and inspected the state of sidewalks and the police with equal aplomb. You were a great ally of the maligned Chinese of the city, and once dispersed a riot by standing between the Chinese and their would-be assailants and reciting the Lord's Prayer quietly, head bowed.

Once arrested, you were swiftly pardoned by the Police Chief with all apologies, after which all policemen were ordered to salute you on the street. Your renown grew. Proprietors of respectable establishments fixed brass plaques to their walls proclaiming your patronage; musical and theatrical performances invariably reserved seats for you and your two dogs. (As an aside, you were a good friend of Mark Twain, who wrote an epitaph for one of your faithful hounds, Bummer.) The Census of 1870 listed your occupation as "Emperor".

The Board of Supervisors of San Francisco, upon noticing the slightly delapidated state of your attire, replaced it at their own expense. You responded graciously by granting a patent of nobility to each member. Your death, collapsing on the street on January 8, 1880, made front page news under the headline "Le Roi est Mort". Barenaked Ladies Are Me

Saturday night, Rick took me to the Barenaked Ladies concert at the Rose Garden in Portland. I was not sure what to expect. I like them, but only have recently started to admit it. However, all I can say is if you get a chance to go see them in person jump on it. It was an amazing show. They are really funny and sound wonderful live.
They did a bunch of stuff from their older albums and they played my favorite song from the new album too.

It's been cold cold cold here the last few days. They'd been calling for snow down to 500 feet (yes I know that's underground in Colorado). The people out here are funny when they start talking about winter weather. The break into every show on the television to give updates. They don't have a lot of snow removal equipment and don't do much as far as sanding/salting etc. I took this picture this afternoon to show what we got. It didn't manage to stick around for very long, but it's supposed to try again tonight. I guess we'll see what happens. The city will likely shut down if we do get anything. Rick will get to stay home, but I'll have to keep working.

Contrary to popular belief, it really doesn't rain ALL the time in the Pacific Northwest. It doesn't even really rain most of the time. The last couple of days have really tried to prove the belief to be a fact. It's rained, and rained, and rained some more. Since November 1st, we've had more rain than we had the entire month of October, and probably pretty close to the entire month of September too. Over 5 inches of rain in 5 days. Don't get me wrong, I love the rain. I also like the fact that it's been in the 60s, so it's been a lovely warm rain, but enough is enough already. I'll have to deal with this off and on all winter so I guess I should be prepared. I'm just not ready yet.

Introducing Serenity

This is Serenity. She's a Soom Mini Gem Aren. She's my first Ball-Jointed Doll. She's currently bald because her stock wig didn't do much for her, it looked like a mutant dog on her head, and the wig PON is sending me won't arrive until tomorrow.
I've been vicariously living through PON for awhile with her BJDs over on Miranda Wandering. I started pestering her about Syri, and we decided that for my birthday she would get me a Soom Mini Gem like her Syrinx.
I loved the fact that she is so poseable and personable and that she can wear Barbie clothes. The thing about these BJDs is they are really customizable but their clothing is really spendy, and since I can't sew, I have to limit my fascination to dolls that can wear store made and less pricey clothes.
I plan to spend a bunch of time getting to know Serenity and post pictures of her. I haven't decided if she's getting her own blog yet or not, though she probably will. In the mean time, expect to see pictures here, or an announcement of a new place to see her if you're interested.

I've never been outside the Continental United States

We went on a lot of family vacations as a kid, drove all over the Southwestern part of the US. I've been to Nevada, Utah, California, Arizona, and New Mexico more times than I can shake a stick at. Once we drove up to South Dakota to see Deadwood, The Crazy Horse Memorial and of course Mt. Rushmore. That being said, there are a ton of states that I haven't been to, which will be discussed later in the coming days.
Our journeys never took us to anyplace outside of the US, or even someplace like Hawaii. My parents were solidly middle class when I was growing up. We weren't poor by any means, but we weren't rolling in the dough either. Since all my relations where in Colorado, that meant that vacations were either going to see them or getting in the car and driving. I'd like to expand my horizons at some point, and Canada is just a stone's throw away now, so hopefully, it will change soon. More later in Fact 3.

I was browsing a ***Dave's blog and read a comment from Domestic Geek who I don't know, but who apparently reads a bunch of the same blogs I do.
Anyway, she is doing a meme that she's seen a bunch of other places, but is new to me.
I decided I would follow along because it seems interesting.
The object of the meme is to post 100 facts about yourself in 100 days. I'm not sure that I can even come up with 100 things that are interesting enough to post about and
I don't know if I'll be able to post something every day, but I'll try.

Fact #1

My dream job would be to be able to open my own restaurant.

I was telling this to Rick the other night. I really want to open a Indian/Mexican fry bread restaurant. Apparently, fry bread that's not East Indian (ie Naan) is totally unknown here. To me, being from Colorado when I say sopapilla I mean a puffy, yeasty sort of bread product that you either eat with honey or stuff with meat and cheese. Here, if you get sopapilla at a Mexican restaurant you basically get a deep fried tortilla rolled in sugar and cinnamon and topped with either whipped cream, pie filling or both. Not a bad thing, but not what I want. The concept of a savory sopapilla is completely foreign. Apparently, the problem with the Mexican restaurants up here was explained to me that I'm used to a Tex-Mex or Indian-Mex style and the food up here is Cal-Mex.

Went and got my hair cut and colored. I think it turned out really well. Obviously not a color found in nature, but I like it none the less.

I’m going out to dinner to this fun sounding Brazilian Restaurant with Rick and his boss Mike. I’ll post a review later.

It’s hot again; it broke 90F again today, and is supposed to be hotter tomorrow. Ugh.
As much as I miss the sun during the winter here, I can’t wait until it cools down. Wednesday it was perfect here, partly sunny and only around 65. I’d love it if it never dropped below 50 and never got above say 80 tops year round. I’m not sure where I’d find that weather, but I’d take it if I could get it.

Summer Vacation 2006 Day 1

My family arrived late on Saturday, and on Sunday we had plans to go to Mount St. Helens. Rick decided that he was close enough to the active volcano at home thank you very much, so he and Lobo decided to just take it easy and spend some quality alone time before we headed out to the coast.
Mal and I had a great time taking pictures, many of which can be found on my flickr page in my Mount St. Helens group. I particularly liked the ones seen here, though as I've been told the one is just a picture of a window. I also got some pictures of a dragonfly or two at the wetland areas that are around the Mount St. Helens Silver Lake Visitor Center. These wetlands were created when the eruption pushed ground water up to the surface. It's all very beautiful. We took a bunch of pictures at the Johnston Ridge Observatory which is just 5 miles from the mountain. The before and after pictures of the area are just amazing, but even more so is all the life that is making its way back to the area. I'm glad I went, and I'll try my best to get Rick to go with me next time I go. However, even though they are opening the actual mountain up for climbing at the end of this month, I think I'll refrain from getting that close...It's a principle thing.

Sunday of Futility

Sunday we got up early (for us) and headed up to Multnomah Falls
Since I was driving, I decided we should take the scenic route up there on the Historic Columbia River Highway. It's a winding 35 MPH road that runs above the current Interstate 84 and the Columbia River. It's a beautiful trip with lots of scenic overlooks and state parks. Our first stop was Chanticleer Point aka The Portland Women's Forum State Scenic Viewpoint.

We stopped again at Vista House, and took some more pictures. We didn't actually take any pictures of Vista House, but you can find some nice ones at their site.

We never made it to Multnomah Falls, because there were WAY to many people and no parking. We'll try again when it isn't a holiday weekend, and perhaps later in the year. Our last stop on the way home down I-84 was Broughton's Point Scenic Overlook.

We snapped some more photos which can be found on the Flickr stream.

This morning ***Dave made mention of an interesting website that shows you the Skyscrapers of the world.
Since the tallest building in Vancouver, Washington is 11 stories (you can put in Vancouver, WA in the search and it tells you the height but has no drawings), I thought I would do a comparison of Denver and Portland. I am showing the 4 buildings that Dave listed for Denver and 5 "buildings" that I got from the site for Portland. It's interesting that the tallest building in Portland is more than 50 feet lower than Denver, and that one of the "buildings" in Portland is a bridge. ***Dave notes that the Trump Tower that is shown in the Denver picture is proposed and doesn't actually exist yet. One Year and Counting

The one year anniversary of our departure from Colorado (6/24) and arrival in Washington (6/26), passed without much fanfare. It's a little strange to think that it's been a year already. Time flies I guess.
Rick and I didn't do anything of note to "celebrate" the event, but we did mention it.
The oddest part about the whole thing is the fact that other than the physical location being radically different, nothing much else has changed.
We both miss our friends and family terribly, but other than that, I think we're both pretty happy. Except for the freak 100 degree weather, it's really not that bad here. Sure, the grey can get a bit overwhelming at times, but all the rain means everything is super lush and green, something you don't get in the high desert of Colorado.
We've talked about what our plans are for the future, if we'll ever move back, and at this time, I don't think we've decided. We can't do anything for at least 5 years, so it's hard to plan what will happen then. I guess we'll see.

Friday was charity screen of Serenity to benefit Equality Now.
I bit the bullet and decided to go by myself and ended up having a great time. They sold raffle tickets, posters and t-shirts. I donated extra money to get all three and actually ended up with 2 items even though I only bought 5 tickets. So far, our screening has raised the most money, which is pretty cool. As of this post the total amount raised was 60K. Not bad for a bunch of geeks.

We decided to take the new camera out for a real test drive. I'm not sure why we decided to do this on the hottest day of the year, but none the less we did. We got a late start, so our plans that we made originally were waylaid. We ended up at Battleground Lake State Park. 100*F + 25% Humidity is not the best time to be hiking around. We had fun though, and took lots of pictures. The new camera is super nice, even if it scares me a little. At some point I'll learn all the bells and whistles. For now, I'm just mostly pointing and shooting, though I did learn how to balance the auto exposure for this shot. I've uploaded some photos to the Flickr page, and decided to bite the bullet and upgrade the to "pro". Now that I have a nice camera, I'll try to put it more to use. Next Sunday, we're going to go up to Multnomah Falls our original destination and take some pictures up there, and then after that we're on vacation at the Oregon Coast, so I'm sure it will get lots of use there.

I had an awesome time at the Counting Crows/Goo Goo Dolls show.
I wasn't sure what I was going to expect from the arena, but it turned out to be really nice. It is a bunch like ~~Fiddlers's Green~~ Coors Amphitheater only the reserved seating is covered. It was very clean, and the sound was pretty good.

The opening act was a band called Augustana. A few months ago, one of their singles was a iTunes free download, so I was familiar with them and liked their single. When I found out they were the opener I decided to buy their album. If you like music that is like The Fray or Maroon Five, you'd probably like these guys.

The Goo Goo Dolls came on next. I'm not sure what to say about GGD. I like them, but I can't say I'm a big fan. I don't own any of their albums, or any of their songs except for the song Iris that was the love theme from City of Angels

They apparently have two lead singers, however from what I can tell all of their "hits" are sung by the guy who is the lead on Iris. Overall, I did like them, the energy was pretty good and their stage show was entertaining. It probably would have been more "wow" if it had been darker, not much "oomph" in a stage show with lights and fog when it's still daylight. None the less, I enjoyed them.

Counting Crows were the closing act. It took a bit to get the Goo Goo Dolls off the stage but it was worth it. I haven't CC in concert for about a year, right before I left Colorado my sister stood in line starting at 4am to get tickets to the free show they put on at the Paramount to celebrate the re-opening of The Gap. It was a good time, and I've missed them. This was going to be my first show with out my sister, so I wasn't sure what to expect. They haven't released a new album with new material in about 4 years, and a couple of members of the band have either retired or moved on to other things. In the end, they did not disappoint at all. The setlist is listed below, and with the exception of Goodnight Elizabeth (since I don't like this song much), it was an amazing show.
I'll definitely try to see them again should they come back to this area.

I'm on book 29, slightly ahead of schedule. I decided that writing a review for each book would take longer than reading the damn things, so I'll pass on that.
I'm going to post a list soon, as soon as I get it put together. The bad part about reading books mostly from the library is you have no real record of them after they're gone. Especially when most of them haven't been overly memorable.

Thus far, as I hoped it would Kushiel's Scion has not be a disappointment, and it is definitely memorable.

I definitely recommed this book to anyone who's read the series of course. If you haven't read the series and you know who you are, you should.

Apparently I have a weird obsession with roses. I found a great little nursery that was having a sale and I bought 4 more rose bushes. When they start to bloom I'll take more pictures. In the mean time, the pretty bush that I was taking pictures of earlier has bloomed up and since it's been trimmed to be this strange stick like thing the heavy blooms were causing it to look fairly pathetic. I was tasked with going to Home Depot and buying some sort of post to help support it. Instead I bought this nifty trellis. I guess that proves that not only guys can spend too much at the Big Orange Money Sink.

The Hardest Part - A wonderful song and great way to start the show.
Wild Soul - This is my 2nd favorite song on the new album, and the chorus is even more haunting live.
Hollow - Love this song. Strange to hear it acoustic, but awesome.
Maybe For a Minute - Another favorite from the new album, really rocking.
Ocean - This is my favorite song from SATE.
Fake Plastic Trees - Cover of a Radiohead song. It was cool, but I'm not that familiar with the song or the band.
The Dead Sea - Love this song, he really did a great job.
You Can Have Your Freedom Back - This song makes me want to cry, very powerful.
When the End Arrives - Sounds much different live, but still great.
Shenandoah - Traditional Folk Song. Very nice. I still need to download this album.

Working In the Backyard

Spent some time today when it wasn't raining, working in the backyard. I pulled some weeds and did a little taking stock. The grass definitely needs to be re-seeded, and I think a bunch of stuff needs to get ripped out.
It's hard to say what can go back there and what will survive in the shade. Who knew having trees would be so much work.

Orange Roses and Pots Galore

I've been busy this week with work and such. I also started doing some things to make the yard space a little more mine. I'm sure the neighbors appreciated me pulling weeds. The back still needs a bunch of work to make it less jungle like, but I don't think anything will happen with that until next year. I planted 5 or so rose bushes in front of the house and will plant bulbs come fall. I also dug out my pots finally and put in some annuals. They didn't turn out as nice as when Andrea does them, but then, I'm not a professional. Seems PON is on the same page that I am. Love those roses. You can see more photos on my Flickr stream, but be warned, my camera sucks.

Handmaidens and Perpetual Pre-Pregnancy

So, PoN and I were talking about a Washington Post article that Mac had recently posted about on her blog. The basis of the article is new

CDC guidelines ask all females capable of conceiving a baby to treat themselves -- and to be treated by the health care system -- as pre-pregnant, regardless of whether they plan to get pregnant anytime soon.

I don't know about you, but I don't want anyone to EVER say I'm "pre-pregnant". Hell, I'm not even sure where I fit into the picture since I now can't have children. Maybe I should run out and start smoking and drinking since my health isn't as important to the CDC since I'm not a potential breeder anymore.
I guess the CDC is just preparing us for the time when birth control and abortion are illegal. The advice they give is good advice, woman and men should take better care of themselves, but the point of the directives to help with high infant mortality are not going to be changed by making all breeding age woman "pre-pregnant" we need to crack down on poverty and increase access to healthcare. Good luck with that...

Casey Stratton is just....WOW

So, tonight, I went off by myself and saw Casey Stratton at this little pub in Portland.
I'm trying to put into words just how AMAZING the show was. Casey sounds beyond wonderful live. He's also a great person. I got his autograph on my copy of Divide and even got my picture taken with him. I'm hoping that Scott and Erin (who I forced myself upon) will send me some information on where the picture will get posted.
More when I have time to write something coherent. As for now, I'm off to dreamland.

Happy Beltaine

Things have been sort of strange around here. Fitting into the new(old) job more or less. Working more than I wanted or expected, but hoping things get back into a rhythm after a bit.
It's been a busy week, and I'm settling back into my routine.
Last week, I gave myself a sterilization for Beltaine. I figured since I was going in for the thermal ablation I might as well get it all done at once.
My mom came out to take me in for my surgery and to babysit me for a week while I recovered. It was nice to see her, and while she was here she cleaned and organized my kitchen and dining room.
I missed her a bunch and was very sad to see her go home.
She'll be back in July along with my Dad, Sister and Nephew. We're going to the coast for a week and staying at a nice rental cottage place. We checked it out and the place is super nice. I can't wait.

The More Things Change....

The more they remain the same I guess.
So, much to my dismay things didn't work out like I planned at the new job. They "love me, and think I do a good job" but there's no money to hire me. So, come August I would be out of a job.
I was sharing this news with Doug and he mentioned that the old job might be looking and maybe I could get back with them. I scoffed and said that I doubted that they'd want me back and pay me what I wanted. However, I looked into it. Needless to say...I started back there today. Trying to get into the swing of things, but it seems like there won't be too sharp of a learning curve. However, I'm trying to treat it like it's all new so I don't getting any unrealistic expectations. Hopefully, they'll do the same, but since I'm already on the project plan...We'll see how it turns out.
Wish me luck. I should mention I did get more money, though not as much as I had hoped. But it is 100% remote so that will help.
